According to estimates, MU will have to pay millions of pounds to fire Dutch coach Erik Ten Hag.
MU is going through a difficult time, currently sitting 13th in the Premier League, and the team’s performance is not promising. Poor and inconsistent displays have put Ten Hag at risk of being dismissed. However, firing Ten Hag will cost MU around £17.5 million, equivalent to €21 million, making it the fourth-highest compensation in football history.
This compensation amount is behind Antonio Conte, who received nearly €30 million when leaving Chelsea in 2019, and two exits of Jose Mourinho. When leaving MU, “The Special One” received about €23.5 million, while in 2007, Mourinho left Chelsea with a compensation of €16 million.
If firing Ten Hag now costs €21 million, four months ago, the figure was only €12 million, a difference of €9 million. This is because, in July, Ten Hag signed a new contract until June 2026. After INEOS took control of MU, the club, which had around 1,100 employees, dismissed 250 staff members, citing “redundant positions” to save about €10 million per year.
This action is not only aimed at cutting costs but also means MU will have to pay compensation to the Dutch coach if he is dismissed. In other words, Ten Hag’s departure indirectly leads to hundreds of job losses at MU.
