According to former star striker Alan Shearer, the future of manager Erik Ten Hag at Manchester United could be decided in the next two matches.
Last Sunday, Man United suffered a heavy 0-3 defeat at home against Liverpool, which brought Ten Hag’s future back into question, even though the 2024/25 Premier League season has only just begun.
Man United currently sits 14th on the table after two consecutive losses, and Red Devils fans are beginning to lose faith in Ten Hag.
The crushing defeat against Liverpool at Old Trafford exposed many of MU’s problems. Despite spending over £200 million this summer to bring in Mazraoui, Leny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte, and De Ligt, the poor performances of Casemiro and his teammates suggest that they have little chance of competing for the Premier League title in 2024/25.
In light of this situation, English football legend Alan Shearer believes that Ten Hag has only two matches left to secure his current position. After the international break in early September, MU will face newly-promoted Southampton in the fourth round of the Premier League on September 14th. Three days later, they will return to Old Trafford to host lower-league side Barnsley in the League Cup.
Shearer stated: “MU’s performance will need to improve significantly if Ten Hag wants to stay at the club by Christmas. His future will hinge on the next two matches.
After embarrassing defeats to Brighton and Liverpool, if MU doesn’t show clear progress in the next two games, it will be very tough for Ten Hag as the pressure from the fans and the board will only intensify. The atmosphere at Old Trafford will become even more heated if the Red Devils continue to disappoint.”
According to the English press, if Manchester United decides to make a managerial change, assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy is likely to be appointed as the new head coach.
