Sir Alex Ferguson declined to watch the match between MU and Porto to attend another game in the Europa League. However, this decision led the former MU manager to another disappointment.
MU managed to earn a dramatic 3-3 draw at Porto’s Dragao Stadium. A last-minute goal from center-back Harry Maguire helped Erik ten Hag’s side salvage a point against their Portuguese rivals.
Unfortunately, Sir Alex was not present at Dragao to witness his former team overcome difficulties. Instead, the 82-year-old former manager chose to watch another match in the Europa League. The Scottish coach was spotted in the stands at Ibrox Stadium, cheering for his hometown team, Glasgow Rangers, in their match against Lyon.
Malick Fofana opened the scoring for Lyon in the 10th minute, before Tom Lawrence equalized 1-1 just minutes later. However, Rangers could not withstand the fierce offensive onslaught from their French opponents. Lyon added three more goals, including a brace from former Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette and another from Fofana.
Sitting in the stands, Sir Alex looked gloomy as he watched Rangers suffer a 1-4 defeat to Lyon. After two matches in this season’s Europa League, Rangers currently have 3 points thanks to their earlier victory over Malmo (2-0) before losing to Lyon.
Since retiring in 2013, Sir Alex has frequently attended important matches for MU. The Scottish manager led the Red Devils for 27 years, winning 38 trophies, including the historic treble in 1999.
A few days before the Porto – MU match, there were reports that Sir Alex had recommended Massimiliano Allegri for the head coach position to replace Ten Hag. The Dutch manager is under immense pressure following a heavy defeat to Tottenham last weekend (0-3).
Allegri, who was recommended by Sir Alex to replace Ten Hag, has been available since leaving Juventus last May. The Italian coach helped Juventus win five Serie A titles and reached the Champions League final twice.
