After the conclusion of the third round of the Europa League 2024/25 group stage, several surprises have emerged. Notably, Manchester United, regarded as a title contender, is at risk of early elimination.
After three matches, United has only managed three draws: 1-1 against Twente, 3-3 against Porto, and 1-1 against Fenerbahce. This disappointing performance has left them in 21st place out of 36 teams, dangerously close to the elimination zone.
Significantly, United has equaled their longest winless streak in European competition, with no victories in exactly one year. Their last win in a UEFA match was a 1-0 victory over Copenhagen in the 2023/24 Champions League.
If their form doesn’t improve soon, United may face early exit from this second-tier European competition, a surprising outcome considering they were seen as favorites at the start of the season.
With five more matches remaining in the Europa League 2024/25, there is still a chance for United to improve their standings. Under the new format, the top eight teams will advance directly to the round of 16, while teams ranked 9th to 24th will enter a playoff. Teams ranked 25th to 36th will be eliminated.
In contrast, fellow English club Tottenham is enjoying a fantastic run, winning all three of their matches and currently sitting in 2nd place. They share 9 points with Lazio and Anderlecht, but differ in goal difference, placing Lazio at the top and Anderlecht in 3rd.
Finally, Roma secured their first victory in this season’s Europa League, having earned just one point in their opening two matches. Artem Dovbyk scored the decisive penalty, giving the Italian side a 1-0 win. With four points, Roma is now ranked 19th in the standings.
