John Stones Appointed Captain of England for UEFA Nations League Clash Against Greece
Interim manager Lee Carsley has confirmed that Manchester City defender John Stones will wear the captain’s armband in the match against Greece at the UEFA Nations League 2024/25, set to take place at Wembley.
In a press conference before the match, Carsley stated, “I had a great conversation with Stones when I proposed him as captain. This is something John deserves due to his experience and the example he sets for younger players.”
Stones, making his captaincy debut in his 82nd international appearance, shared, “This is everything I dreamed of as a child. For my family, witnessing me lead the England team is a special moment. I am very grateful to the coach. Being captain is a huge honor and a moment I will cherish forever.”
Regarding team news, forward Harry Kane continues to train separately, while Jack Grealish is unable to participate in the latest training session due to a minor injury. Carsley emphasized, “We will assess Jack’s condition after the match against Greece; player health is always our top priority.”
The England team has called up Curtis Jones and Tino Livramento to bolster their numbers, while the focus is on Cole Palmer, who is in impressive form. Carsley remarked, “Cole is playing exceptionally well at the club, and I hope he brings that form to the England team. It’s crucial that we find balance in our lineup for a strong attacking display against Greece.”
Meanwhile, new captain John Stones also praised Cole Palmer: “I’ve been a huge fan of Cole since he joined the first team at Man City. What he brings to the game is truly impressive. I hope he can maintain this great form for as long as possible.”
