Liverpool has announced that they have completed the signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia. The 23-year-old goalkeeper will join the Reds in 2025 for a fee of £25 million plus £4 million in add-ons (the specific length of the contract is not disclosed, but it is a long-term deal). However, Mamardashvili will remain on loan at Valencia until the end of the 2024/25 season and will officially move to Anfield in July 2025.
Liverpool has been monitoring Mamardashvili’s progress over recent seasons, and their determination to sign him was reinforced by positive reports and high data analysis scores for the young goalkeeper.
However, Alisson will remain the number one goalkeeper, and signing Mamardashvili is seen as a long-term plan for the position. Mamardashvili was a standout performer for Georgia in their run to the Round of 16 at EURO 2024, where they were eliminated by Spain, who went on to win the tournament in Germany.
Last season, Mamardashvili impressed with 13 clean sheets in 37 La Liga games for Valencia. In total, he has made 102 appearances for the Spanish club, keeping 31 clean sheets. The signing of Mamardashvili is viewed as a preparation for the future of Liverpool’s goalkeeping position.
Alisson has been the number one goalkeeper for Liverpool since his move from Roma in 2018, with his contract at Anfield running until 2027. Caoimhin Kelleher has been the preferred backup goalkeeper in recent years, with his contract expiring in 2026.
Mamardashvili began his career with Dinamo Tbilisi before moving to La Liga in 2021. Liverpool’s investment of nearly £30 million shows their high regard for the goalkeeper and concern that his price might increase in the near future.
