There have been many opinions suggesting that coach Erik Ten Hag should bench Bruno Fernandes, given that the player has been underperforming at the start of the season.
Disappointing Performance Against Crystal Palace
In the recent 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace, Bruno Fernandes was one of the most disappointing players on the pitch. The number 8 midfielder played the full match but did not contribute much positively.
In the 90 minutes he was on the field, Bruno Fernandes lost the ball 34 times. Worse still, his passing accuracy was only 72%, the lowest among starting players in the Premier League.
He attempted three shots, none of which were on target. All he managed were two passes that created attacking opportunities for the team and one successful challenge.
After the match, Bruno Fernandes faced heavy criticism. His form since the start of the new season is also quite alarming. After five matches in the Premier League, the Portuguese player has not scored, despite taking 17 shots on goal.
It’s Time for Ten Hag to Be Ruthless with Bruno Fernandes
Bruno Fernandes’ contributions to Manchester United are undeniable. In recent seasons, he has consistently been among the top scorers and assist providers for the Red Devils.
Besides his technical contributions, Bruno Fernandes is also a spiritual leader. It’s no wonder that coach Erik Ten Hag handed him the captain’s armband since last season.
However, given that Bruno Fernandes is currently at a low point in his form, coach Ten Hag needs to seriously consider benching him. In the attacking midfield position, the Dutch coach has plenty of alternatives.
Mason Mount is returning from injury and eager to prove himself after a disappointing first season at Old Trafford. Kobbie Mainoo could easily play as a number 10. New signing Joshua Zirkzee is also ready to take on the role just behind the main striker. Additionally, don’t forget that Christian Eriksen began his career as an attacking midfielder before transitioning to a deeper role.
In the past, coach Ten Hag was ruthless in benching Harry Maguire for poor performances while he was captain of Manchester United. The English center-back then worked hard to regain his form and reclaim his starting spot last season.
Now, there’s no reason for coach Ten Hag to be lenient with Bruno Fernandes. If he continues to decline in form, the Portuguese midfielder deserves to make way for other players who are performing better.
