How will MU prepare for the match against Brentford?

Manager Erik ten Hag is facing significant challenges as Manchester United finds itself in a left-back crisis ahead of their match against Brentford in the eighth round of the 2024/25 Premier League.

Currently, Ten Hag has only one fit full-back available when MU welcomes Brentford this Saturday, following Noussair Mazraoui’s health issues. With the long-term injuries of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, Diogo Dalot becomes the only remaining option.

Although Mazraoui’s return is uncertain, Dalot will not be able to play on the left due to his inconsistent form, forcing him back to his familiar right-back position. This situation compels Ten Hag to consider other options.

Jonny Evans, the standout player in the match against Aston Villa, could be deployed at left-back. However, at 36 years old, facing off against quicker players will present a considerable challenge for Evans.

Ten Hag might also take a risk by using Amass, a true left-back at just 17 years old, who impressed during the pre-season and has received support from both Shaw and Ten Hag to join the first team. Having a natural left-footed full-back would help MU operate more fluidly, and players like Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho could benefit greatly. However, Amass’s inexperience might require Rashford or Garnacho to provide additional support.

Another option could be to switch to a three-center-back formation, with Antony playing on the left wing, a position he has previously occupied.

Despite these difficulties, Ten Hag and his squad are aiming for three points against Brentford. MU needs to secure a victory to improve their standing, having only won 2 of their first 7 matches and currently sitting 14th in the Premier League table.
