In the 2-3 loss to Feyenoord during the second qualifying round of the 2024/25 Champions League, two Girona players, Herrera and Krejci, scored own goals. Despite their recent participation in the Champions League, Girona has matched a regrettable record set by Fenerbahce in the 2007/08 season.
In the recent match against Feyenoord, Girona started strong, taking the lead with a goal from David López in the 19th minute. However, just four minutes later, Herrera gifted the visitors an equalizer. After Milambo put the Dutch team ahead 2-1 in the 33rd minute, Van de Beek managed to level the score for Girona, but it wasn’t enough for the hosts to secure even a point.
With just 11 minutes left in the match, Krejci also scored an own goal, leaving the “dark horse” of La Liga 2023/24 empty-handed at home. Notably, in their previous match, Girona lost to PSG in the Champions League due to a defensive error.
In that match, the French representatives struggled to break the deadlock against the Spanish guests until the 90th minute, when a serious mistake by Paulo Gazzaniga allowed the ball to slip through his legs and into the net after a low cross from Nuno Mendes.
With three own goals scored in the Champions League so far, Girona has entered the history books as one of the two teams with the most own goals in a single season in Europe’s premier club competition. Given that the 2024/25 season is still long, Girona could potentially surpass Fenerbahce’s record, thereby claiming the title of “most self-harming team.”
Interestingly, in the recent clash, both Girona and Feyenoord missed a penalty. This marked the first time in Champions League history that two players scored own goals and two penalties were missed in the same match.
