Bayern lost 2 impressive records after losing to Aston Villa

With their defeat against Aston Villa in the second match of the Champions League qualifying round 2024/25, Bayern Munich has ended their impressive streak in this tournament.

At Villa Park, a stunning goal from substitute Jhon Duran secured the victory for Aston Villa against the title contenders Bayern Munich.

This loss broke Bayern’s 41-match unbeaten run in the group stage of the Champions League, including the old format. The Bavarian team had maintained their unbeaten streak in the group stage since the 2014/15 season, with 37 wins and 4 draws.

In just a few days, Bayern has lost two impressive statistics. Last weekend, they lost a record for this season. Specifically, after drawing 1-1 against Leverkusen, Bayern ended their six-match winning streak in the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and Champions League. Last season, they also shared points in the first leg against Leverkusen (drawing 2-2) and then lost 0-3 in the second leg, resulting in them losing the Bundesliga title.

Coach Vincent Kompany stated that missing many golden opportunities was a key factor in Bayern’s defeat against Aston Villa: “If you don’t take your chances, this can happen. We had great opportunities but couldn’t convert them into goals. We were careless in one situation, and Aston Villa scored. I understand the circumstances of the opponent, and this was a special night for them.

When we have the ball, we are very dangerous. But Aston Villa is also a strong team. This is not an easy venue. Our performance was not bad. In fact, Bayern only allowed the opponent a few chances, but they executed them very well. If we focus on improving our game, we can still achieve many victories in the future.”

Aston Villa is one of seven clubs that have won both of their opening matches in the Champions League qualifying round 2024/25. With a perfect 6 points, Unai Emery’s team is currently in sixth place in the standings.

According to the draw results, in the remaining matches of the Champions League qualifying round, Aston Villa will face Bologna, Club Brugge, Juventus, RB Leipzig, AS Monaco, and Celtic in succession. This is considered a very favorable schedule for Unai Emery’s team.
