Ruben Amorim began his role as Manchester United’s head coach with his first working day at Carrington on Monday afternoon.
After leading Sporting Lisbon to a 4-2 comeback victory over Braga and maintaining a perfect record with 11 consecutive wins in the domestic league on Sunday, Amorim, along with 5 members of his coaching staff, boarded a private plane from Beja Airport (Portugal) at 11 a.m. and landed in Manchester around 1:45 p.m. local time.
Upon arrival at Carrington, Amorim was warmly welcomed by Manchester United’s executives, including CEO Omar Berrada, Director of Football Dan Ashworth, and Technical Director Jason Wilcox. They showed him around the Carrington facilities, which are undergoing a £50 million upgrade this season, before he had meetings with key staff members in the afternoon.
The players not called up for the current FIFA international break were also at Carrington on Monday to welcome their new coach. Everyone was excited and happy to meet Amorim.
On his first day, Amorim also met with Ruud van Nistelrooy, who had just completed his role as interim coach after a 3-0 win over Leicester on Sunday. Although Van Nistelrooy wished to stay on the coaching staff, his departure was confirmed by MU. In the farewell statement, Manchester United expressed their gratitude, stating, “Ruud is and will always be a Manchester United legend. We appreciate his contributions and how he performed his role during his time at the club. He will always be welcome at Old Trafford.”
In addition to Van Nistelrooy, assistant coach Rene Hake, goalkeeper coach Jelle ten Rouwelaar, and analyst Pieter Morel have also left Old Trafford.
Currently, Amorim is still waiting for his visa to be processed before he can officially begin coaching at Carrington. Manchester United hopes the process will go smoothly and quickly.
Amorim is set to make his debut on November 24, when Manchester United will face Ipswich Town away in the 12th round of the Premier League.
