Alan Shearer has lavished praise on Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt following his standout performance against Southampton.
United secured a 3-0 victory in the Premier League on Saturday, with De Ligt scoring the opening goal with a header and impressing defensively throughout the match.
The Dutch defender finished the game with a pass accuracy rate of 92%. He won 100% of his aerial duels and made 6 clearances for the Manchester giants.
De Ligt was rightfully named the best player of the match. Shearer, while selecting De Ligt for his Team of the Week, commented: “Scoring with a superb header and keeping a clean sheet as Manchester United comfortably beat Southampton.”
The 25-year-old had an underwhelming international break with the Netherlands, making significant defensive errors against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Germany.
Despite this, Erik ten Hag continued to trust the Dutch center-back, and De Ligt repaid the manager’s faith with a commanding performance.
