Edu commented on leaving Arsenal to join Nottingham

Sporting director Edu has broken his silence following his shocking resignation from Arsenal to join Nottingham.

Edu joined Arsenal as technical director in July 2019 and later became the club’s first sporting director in November 2022. He was responsible for securing quality signings like Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice while also helping to sell high-wage players who no longer had value, such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mesut Ozil.

Since Edu arrived at the Emirates, Arsenal has spent £867 million, only Chelsea and Manchester United have spent more during this period, and has won the FA Cup and finished as runners-up in the last two Premier League seasons. Edu had a close relationship with head coach Mikel Arteta, working together to build a strong squad and make Arsenal a title contender.

However, yesterday, Edu announced his decision to leave Arsenal after five years to join the football empire of Nottingham’s owner, Greek businessman Evangelos Marinakis. This news was confirmed by Arsenal in a statement on Monday evening.

Edu shared his thoughts on this shocking move: “This is truly a very difficult decision. Arsenal has given me the opportunity to work with many wonderful people and to be part of a special moment in the club’s history.”

It has been a special journey, and I want to thank Stan, Josh, Tim, and Lord Harris for their support. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with so many great colleagues across the men’s, women’s, and academy teams, especially Mikel, who has become a great friend. Now is the time to pursue a new challenge. Arsenal will always be in my heart. I wish the club and the fans all the best,” the former Brazilian international added.

Co-chairman Josh Kroenke expressed heartfelt gratitude to the outgoing director: “We respect Edu’s decision and thank him for his tremendous contributions and dedication to moving the club forward. Everyone at the club wishes him all the best.”

We all love him and the positive energy he brings to everyone. Change and evolution are part of the club. We remain focused on our strategy and winning major trophies. Our succession plan will reflect this ongoing ambition,” the Arsenal chief added.
