Slot is still aiming to sign Barca’s star

In a recent statement on the club’s official website, coach Arne Slot affirmed that Trent Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk will not be distracted by rumors about their future. However, the English press revealed that Slot is quietly looking for potential replacements if both players leave Anfield.

The contract between Liverpool and Trent Alexander-Arnold will expire at the end of the 2024/25 season, and his future has become a hot topic. There are reports that Real Madrid is preparing to sign the 1998-born star on a free transfer next summer, similar to Kylian Mbappé’s situation. Real could even make an early offer in the January 2025 transfer window if they need reinforcements for the season’s final stretch.

Despite concerns from fans, coach Arne Slot remains confident about his player. He affirmed that Trent Alexander-Arnold will not be distracted by rumors regarding Real Madrid. “I think people underestimate Liverpool’s players. They are used to receiving interest from top clubs every day, regardless of their contract status,” Slot said. “If anyone thinks they will be disturbed by these rumors, they don’t fully understand the players’ mental strength or what they are accustomed to. It’s just part of the job.”

In addition to Trent, Liverpool is also facing challenges in extending Van Dijk’s contract. Speaking about his fellow Dutchman, Slot defended him: “Van Dijk is a pillar of Liverpool. Through his performances on the field, everyone can see his quality and how much he contributes to Liverpool. But what people don’t often notice except me is Van Dijk’s importance in every training session. He motivates and lifts the spirits of his teammates, acting as a true leader. Van Dijk doesn’t deserve the criticism he’s currently facing.”

Nonetheless, the English press suggests that Liverpool is preparing for the worst-case scenario. The club is targeting Barcelona’s Jules Kounde, a versatile defender who can play both as a center-back and right-back. Although Kounde is under contract with Barca until June 2027, Barca may consider a reasonable offer from Liverpool.

According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool is also interested in Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck if Van Dijk departs. The club is reportedly willing to spend around €50 million to sign the 24-year-old defender in the summer of 2025.

Currently, Liverpool is preparing for their match against Leipzig in the third round of the 2024/25 Champions League group stage, set to take place at 2:00 AM on October 24th.
