Chelsea is in need of a new goalkeeper

This is a criticism from former England star Jamie Carragher directed at Chelsea’s goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

Curtis Jones became Liverpool’s hero when he earned a penalty in the 29th minute and scored the winning goal to secure a 2-1 victory over Chelsea. Liverpool legend and Sky Sports expert Carragher criticized Sanchez for lacking leadership in the penalty area, particularly after Reece James allowed Jones to bypass him and score.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the match, Carragher said, “It was a poor performance from Chelsea. Reece James went in there, but the goalkeeper was terrible. That was really a poor touch from Curtis Jones, and the same goes for Robert Sanchez. Sanchez should have claimed that ball. If he had done so, Jones might not have scored. Chelsea needs a new goalkeeper if they want to progress.”

Chelsea’s coach, Enzo Maresca, also commented on Sanchez’s performance after the match, but he revealed that he was satisfied with the Spanish goalkeeper’s display at Anfield. Maresca stated, “I’m very happy with Robert; he’s doing very well for us. He made some crucial saves, and that’s definitely commendable.”

After the defeat to Liverpool in the spotlight match of Round 8 in the 2024/25 Premier League, Chelsea will face Panathinaikos in the Conference League next Thursday.
