There’s been much surprise in the media regarding Antonio Conte’s usage of Scott McTominay and how well he fits into Napoli’s setup.
In the summer of 2024, Scott McTominay left Manchester United for Napoli in a €30 million deal. Although he came through United’s Carrington academy, McTominay had largely been confined to a deep-lying midfield role, primarily tasked with breaking up opposition play and providing defensive support.
However, under Scotland manager Steve Clarke, McTominay has been unleashed. He’s been deployed in a more attacking role, showcasing his ability to make penetrating runs into the box.
Conte aims to see McTominay contribute more offensively at Napoli. This was evident in their recent draw with Juventus, where Sport Media Set highlighted how Conte has given McTominay the chance to shine:
“The performance of the Scottish player drew attention for his rhythm, creativity, and quality in serving his new team. There was something missing in Conte’s midfield that could hardly be fulfilled without the former Man United player. McTominay has proven himself to be the right fit to help Napoli progress.”
According to Sport Media Set, McTominay would never have been given such responsibilities at Manchester United under Ten Hag. With Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount available to play as attacking midfielders, plus veteran Christian Eriksen also capable of stepping in, opportunities for McTominay were virtually non-existent.
