Old Trafford could potentially cease to exist in the future.
Manchester United is prepared to abandon plans to retain Old Trafford if they proceed with building a new £2 billion super stadium next door. This would mean the 114-year-old home of Manchester United could be demolished if the club opts not to redevelop it and instead pursue their preferred option of creating a “Northern Wembley” with a capacity of 100,000 seats.
This past summer, Manchester United revealed plans to reduce Old Trafford’s capacity to around 30,000 seats to preserve the club’s history and create a venue for the women’s team and youth academy. However, sources have informed Mail Sport that the club now realizes this is unlikely to become a reality, as such a project would be overly complex and cost hundreds of millions of pounds.
Old Trafford holds immense sentimental value for Manchester United fans worldwide, featuring the Munich Clock and the memorial tunnel commemorating the tragic air disaster of 1958, as well as statues of Sir Matt Busby, Sir Alex Ferguson, Jimmy Murphy, and the trio of Sir Bobby Charlton, George Best, and Denis Law.
