According to Diario AS, there has been a surprising update regarding Frenkie de Jong’s injury recovery at Barcelona.
De Jong has not played any matches for either Barcelona or the Netherlands since suffering an ankle injury during the El Clásico against Real Madrid in April. The 27-year-old initially was expected to be sidelined until the early part of the season, but even with the 2024/25 La Liga season already having progressed through five rounds, the midfielder’s return has been delayed due to slow recovery.
Previously, Spanish media speculated that Barcelona’s management might require de Jong to undergo surgery to definitively resolve the issue, potentially keeping him off the pitch until the end of the calendar year 2024.
However, according to the latest update from Diario AS, de Jong has resumed training with his Barcelona teammates as of yesterday. The report also states that head coach Hans-Dieter Flick and his staff are confident that the Dutch star will be fit to participate in Barcelona’s upcoming match against Getafe next week.
This news comes as a relief to Barcelona fans, especially as reports surfaced that midfielder Dani Olmo might be sidelined for four weeks due to a hamstring injury.
In addition to de Jong, Barcelona is set to welcome back Ansu Fati and Fermin Lopez this weekend.
Currently, Barcelona still has four other players—Gavi, Andreas Christensen, Ronald Araujo, and Marc Bernal—whose return dates remain uncertain due to various injuries.
